Spicy Korean Braised Tofu

This is a simple side dish from Korea. I actually eat this as my main and only meal sometimes. If its too spicy for you, obviously adjust the seasoning, or eat it with freshly cooked rice to make the heat a little subtle.

If you don’t have an air fryer, you can fry the tofu conventionally, but avoid deep frying them, try to be as healthy as we can. Just pan fried with a couple tablespoons of cooking oil, or best avocado oil.

Ingredients:

1 package of medium to firm tofu

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

1 clove garlic -minced

½ medium onion -minced

2 stalks scallions -thinly sliced then divided

Cooking oil spray

For sauce:

mix all below ingredients in a small bowl then set aside.

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp kosher salt

1 tsp sugar

1 tbsp red pepper flakes

½ cup water

Instructions:

  • Rinse tofu in cold water and dry it with paper towel. Cut in half lengthwise then cut again into 1/4 inch thick.
  • Place the sliced tofu in the air fryer then spray with cooking oil spray and cook at 450F for 10 mins, flip them over and cook for 5 minutes more or until crunchy and golden brown.
  • Transfer fried tofu to a plate.
  • In a medium skillet over medium high heat, saute onion garlic and half portion of scallions. Stir occasionally cook for about 5 minutes until the onion turns browned.
  • Add the sauce mixture and keep stirring until the sauce significantly reduced and thickens.
  • Add tofu to the skillet and braise for a few minutes.
  • Add sesame oil for fragrant and taste.
  • Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and the rest of scallions. Enjoy!
